What utter nonsense. What basis of fact do you have to make such
allegations? I am a member of the Unification Church that you refer
to and know categorically that such allegations of brainwashing
are a result of the hysteria of the media and of know-nothings.
And as for another comment you made earlier in this thread, religious
people have been advising people successfully about how to lead a
good life a lot longer than the therapists have and have learned
from their mistakes. The religious way of life has been around for
thousands of years because it has something of value to offer. The
fads have come and gone. Psychotherapy is a poor substitute for
learning to live a moral and responsible life.

That is true, but I created the newsgroup alt.religion.unification
and it is widely carried. It was simple, no discussion, just do
it. That is the whole reason for the alt hierarchy. As long as
the names are not totally frivolous and the newsgroup will be used
for discussion of something that is not illegal, there is a good
chance that it will be carried, especially by the commercial
providers.

No, members of the Unification Church would not like that name. I
created alt.religion.unification and because it was in the alt.*
hierarchy, I asked nobody. Unification Church members on the whole
don't like the name "moonie" and prefer to be called "unificationists".
In the religion hierarchy, "lds" may not be ambiguous, but it is
not very descriptive for those who don't know the abbreviation.

I am happy to provide information on the Unification Church as we
have nothing to hide or be ashamed of. However, I am curious as to
your assessment of Rev. Moon. You mention three points:
1) Brilliant businessman: Well, the success of his global business
activities leaves that one in little doubt. I just read in a
Unificationist publication that members of the Unification Church
are now building cars, vans and light trucks in Vietnam. (Unification
News, March 1996, p 2).
2) Criminal: Rev. Moon was imprisoned six times in his life,
according to his biography. Once in the USA, once in Japan, once
in South Korea and three in North Korea (I am not sure of this
distribution, but I believe the total to be correct). Consider the
charges against him though. He was convicted on various charges in
North Korea in the vein of corrupting the young people, something
like Socrates in ancient Greece. Yet, for this he was sent to the
notorious Hung Nam labor camp where most men died within the first
few months of captivity. It is an amazing testimony to his strength
of spirit and body that he survived 2 years and 8 months under that
harsh regime before being liberated by the bombing and advancing
America troops following the brilliant Inchon landing led by General
Douglas McArthur in 1950. On other occasions, he was imprisoned
and tortured by the North Koreans. In Japan, he was imprisoned and
tortured for assisting the Korean resistance during the Japanese
occupation of Korea. In the USA, he was imprisoned on tax charges
that were later found by a Senate committee chaired by Sen. Orrin
Hatch to be unjust. He was holding money in his own name, something
many ministers do, when the government never disputed that the
money was used for church purposes, yet they charged that he owed
personal income taxes of $12,000 on the money. Why not send him a
bill? Presidents Bush and Clinton had at various times similar tax
liabilities and there was never any question of criminality in
their cases. The fact that he has been imprisoned so many times is
a testimony to his courage in the face of evil, rather than evidence
of any wrongdoing.
3) Traitor: Let's see. Rev. Moon has invested more than a billion
dollars, yes "B", $1000,000,000 in the United States since he came
here in the early 1970s. He has promoted a moral resurgence through
the newspaper The Washington Times. He was a major figure in the
battle against atheistic communism, he has sent missionaries to
every country in the world, he has been involved in famine relief
efforts, he has started or developed seminaries, universities,
ballet schools, video production businesses, cable TV companies,
boat building companies, fish processing plants, off shore fishing,
construction companies, conferences for scientists, ministers of
religion, former heads of state, young people, women, and so on.
He has promoted a message of repentance and reconciliation with
God, the sanctity of marriage, the importance of the family, sexual
purity, and has officiated over the weddings of more than 400,000
couples. He will conduct a wedding next year for a projected 3.6
million couples, though the number could go as high as 10 million
as there are already the 3.6 million target awaiting his Blessing
in Africa alone. He has promoted social responsibility, helping
the poor and underdeveloped countries through manpower and
technological investment, and I could go on. The list of the
companies and organizations that he has founded goes on for pages.
He has received honorary doctorates from many universities for his
humanitarian works and inspired teaching. He has been acclaimed by
the leaders in many fields as a visionary, way ahead of his time.
Yet, he has consistently been ridiculed by the mediocre minds of
our day.
The heroes are remembered by history, their detractors are barely
a footnote, if they are remembered at all.

I think you will find that Dr. Pak lives and works in Japan, not
the USA. I know several of his children, and know of his work in
Japan. He had great success with nationwide speaking tours, reviving
the Japanese Unification Church, bringing a new vision of hope to
the nation. Japan is facing many of the same woes as the USA, moral
degeneration in the midst of affluence.

I publish online all of Father's speeches published by HSA Publications as
much as is humanly possible. You may be interested to know that Rev. Kwak
in a recent issue of "Tongil Seygye", the Korean UC monthly, publicly
advocated putting ALL of Father's speeches on the Internet. We have
nothing to fear of people knowing what Father is doing. If people truly
knew what Father is doing and saying, I think they would be awe-inspired
and moved to support Father. The main reason that we have not gained
members is that we have not taught what Father teaches, and I heard Father
say that with my own ears. He also advocated all his speeches being made
available to the public unedited, on paper and on video and audio tape. I
have the speech where he said it, and I was also present. This was said
before the rise of the Internet to public awareness.

I will make those available too. I am soon to get a CD-ROM of Father's
speeches in Korean, and I plan to put them all online. I am sorry, but I
fundamentally disgree with you.

Okay. :-)

Those who would distort what Father says will do it with the most
innocuous of material because they are not operating out of integrity and
a desire for truth and to live a righteous life. So, who cares what such
people think? If we restrict information from them, we restrict it from
the many thousands, or even millions who would like to receive the words
of truth that God is giving to humanity through Rev. Sun Myung Moon.

Contact Hyun Jin Nim at World CARP. He is working on it, though it is in
Korean for now. I hope to see something similar in English very soon.

Not me, I like the controversial stuff the best and I think Father wants
his words to be heard. The controversial things that he says, he has a
reason for saying them, so who are we to edit what God is saying to us
through Father?

I read your section on God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit being one. You
mis-stated the URL for the page. For others who want to read it, it is:
http://www.earthlink.net/~panaceainc
In the Unificationist perspective, Jesus embodied God's nature, and
commanded each of us to do the same. So he said that the day will come
when he will be in the Father, and we in Him and Him in us. So, God's
intent is that ALL of us should be like Jesus and embody God's nature.
Then, we shall all be one with God, and in so doing, we will become one
with one another, one human family, without conflict. That is what we call
the Kingdom of God on Earth. For this to happen, Christ must return with a
flesh body as he came the first time. How can this be? It will be another
man with the same mission. He will marry and leave a lineage, and be the
eternal Father, Prince of Peace, King of Kings. That man has already come.
His name is Sun Myung Moon.
Sincerely,

Thanks, Damian for posting this speech. I wasn't aware this conference
was going on until I saw your post. I now discover that The Sekai Nippo
newspaper in Japan covered the conference. Here is my English synopsis
of their Japanese coverage.
June 17 -- the conference opened at the Keio Plaza Hotel in Shinjuku,
Tokyo. Those attending included present and former heads of state and
government from some 40 maritime states and island countries, including
President Amata Kabua of the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
Mr. Takeru Kamiyama addressed the opening ceremony in his capacity as
senior advisor to the organizing committee. He was followed by a
Japanese politician and then Mr. Mulroney. The former PM spoke of the
need for international leadership and cooperation in order to address
the problems that have arisen following the end of the Cold War.
Rev. Sun Myung Moon did not attend the conference, but sent his
message.
June 18 -- the conference adopted a joint statement affirming that
island countries play a vital role as bridges of peace; and that
only unconditional love and international cooperation can resolve
the world's problems.
Former prime ministers of Canada and Iceland spoke during the
conference.
Perhaps someone can post the official English texts.

Thank you.

The path to accomplish this has been laid out by our teacher. We
are fortunate that we can follow him and learn from him while he
is still alive. Very few religious people can say that they lived
during the lifetime of the founder of their faith.
